Blind Dogs Rule!
Bon Jovi

Update: August 3, 2010

Bon Jovi loves, loves, loves his big brothers.  Here he is with  Yasha.
He's always near one of them snuggling.
- Bev
Update: September 9, 2010

Just wanted to know that Bon Jovi is doing great, is completely house
broken now.  And has a new name.  He never answered to Bon Jovi at  all.  So his
new name is Ami, as in Mon Ami, which means my friend in  French, correct
me if I'm wrong our French speaking volunteers, or in Hebrew Ami  means my
people, so either way, he's my friend and I'm his people.  And he  answered to
it right away.

He just absolutely loves my gang, he's very gentle with them and never
pounces on them or slaps them, which is normal behavior for Sibes.

He would make a great therapy dog, go visiting the elderly in nursing homes
or assisted living homes.  He's so gentle and so sweet.

- Bev

Update: December 18, 2010

I think Animal Control should be called on me for abusing little Ami.   I
make him sleep in a queen size bed all alone.  Just look at him, sheer
torture, poor little pathetic thing.    (scroll down)

OK, everyone can hang up their phones, reinforcements have come in  to
keep Ami company, the big guns have arrived.  : ))  You can  really see how
tiny he is compared to his brothers, Yasha and Yuri.

Wally
Update: August 2, 2010

Wally's adopters checked back in with us in August 2010. They love him, and are spoiling him rotten!

"Wally Man is loving it here AT HOME!!!! Smiles all the time! We have had some trials but he is a good boy!

When he is nervous or such, he loves to be on our lap and be petted. It calms him!"

-Wally's Furever Family

Update: September 10, 2010

Wally “Bear” Erickson

Wally Bear (or Wally Lion as our son, Jon refers to him sometimes) is living the life at our home in Pinckney, Michigan. We refer to him (and yes, his middle name is Bear) and he lives up to the name because he is such a teddy bear.

When he first came into our house, there was a rawhide under the table from Lady, he just laid down and started chewing. From that point on, we knew he WAS HOME TO STAY. He was also heart-worm positive and we didn’t know the extent of his blindness. We have since got him care, where he loves the techs and the vet. We have him treated and he is almost positively cured from the heart-worm. We also found out that Wally has cataracts quite badly (which we aren’t sure what is beyond that and don’t want to do surgery which could cause more harm than good). However, we have found that he can see light and shapes, which benefit him well when Grandma is around with treats!

He is a good boy and loves to run and play in our front yard while being on his lead. His new big sister, Lady Grace or E, goes outside with him and is his seeing-eye -dog and protects him from anything that comes up to scare him. He loves to chew on bones, pig snouts, and Bully sticks for hours to entertain himself. He loves to be scratched in front of his ears, loves to get hugs and kisses from us (especially our son) and puts his cute head up on the bed to wake you up in the morning. Being with Lady, he has learned that he has a voice and needs to be heard. Once she starts barking, he chimes in, and always gets the last word (bark). Which is definitely a trait in this family!

This summer, we visited our family cottage. Wally at first wasn’t to sure of the water and we really had to coax him in (with the help of a lead). But after a couple of times, he loved to walk and wade around in the cool water, especially on the hot days. We could take him in the shallow water and walk along the shore a bit down from the cottage.

We want to thank all those (way to many to name) for bringing Wally Bear into our life. He has definitely become part of OUR family. If we have a chance to adopt another one in the future, we will! You are all special and part of our family too. We will make sure to send pictures and update you all on his life with us!

Andrew, adopted 4/2010
Update: July 11, 2010

Andrew is doing great. He is growing like a weed. He weighs 58 pounds and is healthy as can be. We love him very much.

Andrew has a best friend beside Fiona. His name is Hunter. He is my son's Australian Cattle Dog. He spends every other weekend with us. Hunter will be 2 years old in Dec. so all they do is play when he is here. They are hilarious to watch.

Update 12/1/10:

Andrew is doing great! He truly loves his big sister Fiona. Those two are
something else. Andrew has really brought Fig out of his big brother shell
and those two are funny to watch play. He's a bed hog but usually stays in
one spot. We found out he is allergic to peanut butter. :( So nothing with
peanuts for him. He has gotten a little on the chubby side but my husband
doesn't seem to think so. He loves the dog park. Well, all of our dogs love
the dog park. He makes friends quickly but is never far from Fiona. He has
really come out of his shell and has quite the personality. The best we can
describe his personality is he can entertain himslef when Fiona wants a
break, he's a begger for attention or food, he's not pushy at all he's more
reserved especially with new surroundings. He's not afraid but usually sits
quietly and assesses the situation before he participates. He absolutely
loves everyone he meets. He has several nicknames: Kissyface, Kissy, Pork
Sausage Puppy, Chub's, and of course Andrew.

We love him dearly and we are so happy he chose us to be his family.

My husband is going to take a picture of him tomorrow so you can see the
latest.

Updated Pictures (below): January 19, 2011

Update 7/27/11:

He's doing great and we have him on a diet with more walking and hiking. The vet says he needs to lose 13 pounds.

He is so smart and loves to do yard work with me. He helps me drag the tree limbs to the pile.  He is so funny. When I have a tree limb he wants to help me drag I give him his own tree limb and we walked together to the pile.
Andrew drops it right in the pile and doesn't run off with it. After he drops it in the pile he looks at me waiting for me to say " Yay Andrew! Good Boy! " As soon as I say that he gets a big smile on his face and wags his tail and is ready to go get another one. He has done this several times so I know he really understands what he is doing. He loves helping outside. We love him so much.

Adam - adopted 2010

Adam was our very first BDRA foster dog. He is now doing wonderfully in his new home. On July 11, 2010, we received some new photos of him!

Update: October 22, 2010

He is absolutely the sweetest, nicest dog I've ever had.  We love him so much -
everyone who walks past him always has to stop and hug him, because that's
just how Adam is - he has truly been a blessing to our home - he keeps my
other dog, Kaylee, company all day and he sleeps in with my daughter (like a
living teddy bear) ... we just love him - thank you so much for all you do
to help dogs like Adam.

Maggie May - adopted June 17, 2010
Update: July 23, 2010

Maggie came into our lives and hearts on June 17, 2010. She has filled our home with love and laughter. She loves to take walks and usually goes at a full trot! Not bad for a senior gal! We lost our sweet cat Mickey last year and something was missing. Maggie has filled that void. We couldn't imagine life without her. My grandchildren love her and visit often to play with her. We've all gained joy and happiness with Maggie in our lives. Ron and Rita and Dominic and Gianna

Update: October 27, 2010

Hi, just wanted to let
everyone know that Quade adopted my husband and I. We got him last Thursday.
He is so sweet. We took him camping this last weekend. He did really well.
He slept right between my husband and me in the camper. He is napping on his
pillow at my grooming shop now. He has fit right in with our family. Thank
you BDRA for saving him and taking such good care of him. We have started
the spoiling!! And we look forward to spoiling him for the rest of his
life!!

Update: November 3, 2010 (below)

Quade had his 1st Halloween with us. And we had to dress him up. Because he is now a spokes doggie for Furry Kids Grooming. We had a Howl-o-ween Pawty on Sun. We had goodies for hairless kids, as well as furry kids. We had a pet costume contest. We excepted donations, with ALL donations going to BDRA! With the help of ...a lot of great people we raised $60 for BDRA. You can go to furrykidsgrooming here on FB and look at all the cute furry kids in their costumes!! And Quade doing his duties a spokes doggie! :)

Finn

Update: October 19, 2010

Finn has been a blast to be around! He is still a sweetheart and loves to
meet new people and pets.Went to the vet and had his chip placed and he's
all good. I will send out some pictures soon as my daughter gets back with
her camera.
Cooper

Update: October 19, 2010

Cooper is doing great.  He is best friends with her daughter's boyfriend's
dog, a black lab.  They love to run and play together and she is hoping to
put a video of them up on Facebook.  He also plays with one of their cats.
He sleeps with Christie and her husband.  They all love him and he is very
happy.
Floyd

Update: October 19, 2010

I have to tell you that Tom and I have loved Floyd since we saw his photo
on PetFinder. I just knew we would not be disappointed. He is one of the
sweetest and most gentle dogs I've ever had in my family. He hasn't really
bonded with my other dog, Daisy, yet. I think she's a little jealous because
she was the only dog for a year. She isn't mean to him but is somewhat aloof
towards him. I think she will eventually warm to him but, in the meantime,
Tom and I are happy to spoil him! Talk to you soon.
Pete (formally Prince)

Update: October 22, 2010

Here is Pete being the cutie pie that he is. He just loves to snuggle!
Uri

Update: October 22, 2010
(Below) Update 6/21/11:

My mom's dog was visiting for the dat so I set up the small crate. He didn't get a chance to use it. Uri is unaware of his massive size I guess!!

Sparky

Update: October 22, 2010

New picture of Sparky. Sparky is relaxing in one of his three beds. My blind dog Susie Q stepped on Sparky while lying on the floor. He got up and went to sleep on the raised hearth of the fireplace. So we went out and purchased another bed for him. This is now his spot...Look how beautiful he is.

Draven (formally Fallon)

Update: October 22, 2010

Draven, formally Fallon, is doing fantastic! When we brought him into our
home he was 45 lbs. When Dr. Adam weighed him last month he was at 57lbs! We
walk about 5 miles, and then run about 5 miles everyday. The only reason we
don't go any farther is because I can't go any farther! On September 12th we
had Draven's Left eye removed, and WOW what a difference. He has more
energy, more alertness, and his vision in his right eye has improved
slightly. He loves meeting all the small dogs in the neighborhood, and his
tail is wagging, and he is carrying it up more often. He still is not vocal,
except for very rarely when he will give a little growl to big dogs, or a
small bark while playing, but still both a very under his breath.
His eye is looking fantastic, and when the hair grows back, it will be
almost invisible. His fur is really really soft now.

Smudge

Update: October 22, 2010

Smudgy is doing wonderful!!!  She is full of energy and always trying to
get one of the other animals to play with her.  I love her so...Everyone
loves her who meets her, she is such a social bug - and you wouldn't know
she is blind.  She enjoys her backyard and loves bouncing toys in the air
and catching them.  I recntly added a new special needs Shitzu - poodle -
about 5 pounds - to my pack and Smudgy has kind of taken her under her
wing.

Xinda

Update: September 30, 2010

Lets have a bale of fun. Xinda is doing very well. We love our long morning walks in the field and woods

Dawn and Xinda walking with Linda and Maggie. Maggie is missing her left eye due to a gun shot from her neighbor. Xinda and Maggie are best buddies, i dont know what we will do when Maggie goes back to Florida in October.

Bia

Update: November 1, 2010

Bumble Bia's first Halloween in Philly!

Queenie

Update: November 12, 2010

"She is an absolute doll and I’m so grateful that she is a part of our lives. She
is unbelievably smart – we’re currently learning how to play fetch – and
there are times that you would never know that she is blind. We once went
out with a huge dog walking group and it took someone an hour and a half to
finally exclaim – “Wait a minute! She’s blind?!” We’re just so proud of her
and her strength!
She cannot get enough of people and other animals (she really, truly LOVES
cats!) and really knows how to work the room whenever we work BDRA
fundraisers.  People flock to pet her and ask loads of questions about her
story and the rescue. She’s even a little bit of a local star – she’s
recognized all around town (There’s no such thing as “running to the store”
with her. You have to tack on an extra 20 minutes for chatting with
strangers!) and she’s constantly complemented on during our morning and
afternoon walks. Because of her gentle demeanor and the way she instantly
connects with people we’re looking to have her certified as a therapy dog.
We’re just taking our time, trying to find one that’s the right fit for us." - Queenie's New Family
Journey

Update: November 12, 2010

"Journey is doing very well and we all love her.
She has adjusted to her forever home quickly."
Millie (Formally Nelly)

Update: November 12, 2010

Hello, I think you mean "Miss Milliscent the Magnifiscent" a/k/a Millie!

Millie is a delight!  We LOVE her deep "woof!" and tail wag.  She is the
sweetest little girl who gives happy licks and snuggles.  She gets along
beautifully with her canine brother, Gibbs the Great, and tolerates his high
energy pleasantly.  She gets along well with most of her cat siblings (SHE
gets along with all;  not all are enamored of the competition for mom's and
dad's attention and will hiss at her!) and has learned to avoid our ancient
"Sylvester" who doesn't particularly like anyone.  Millie chooses to sleep
in her house (the un-gated dog carrier) under the vanity near our bed or on
the floor under the bed -- always on my side where I can reach down to pet
her.  She is wonderful about letting me put in her antibiotic eye drops and
cream for chronic inflammation, ectropion, glaucoma, and dry eye.  Our vet
feels that surgery at her age (he estimates 12 or 13) would be too invasive
but her sclera is white and she seems comfortable with this twice daily
treatment.

Millie still has urinary incontinence issues due probably to a mild form of
Cushing Disease although she still tests negative for this condition.
Accidents are minimized when we are able to put her outside every 4-5 hours
but, if we actually sleep through the night or I am away at work all day,
this is not possible!  She is easy enough to clean up after, though.  She
always does her poops outside and, depending on the weather, she will often
trot for a fairly long walk at least once a day with Gibbs and me.
Otherwise, she is content to stay tied in the yard while we take the walk
without her.

Millie has adapted well to our house.  She knows where her food is doled out
and where to look for her dish, she woofs when she is out of water and is
thirsty (we moderate her intake to deal with the incontinence because she
will drink any amount until it is gone), she know where major objects to
avoid are (like the hearth and furniture), and can trot between her bed, the
kitchen and the door without bumping into anything.  When  she is outside
and wants to come in, she is perfectly capable of climbing up the stairs and
woofing/scratching at the door.  Otherwise, this little princess insists on
being carried down the stairs and, if she can get away with it, back up!
When supervised off leash, she stays in the yard/driveway unless she wants
to take a walk in which case she heads down the driveway to the road.  She
is amenable to being scooped up so we can go inside to get the leash!

She has been groomed twice since we got her and the groomers love her!  She
has also been boarded twice, in the same roomy kennel with her brother, and
has charmed everyone there into extra play time just because she's so
sweet.  Not sure what else we can say except she usually writes her own
emails to stay in touch with her foster mom but she's already asleep for the
night (or at least until I wake her up for one last visit to the lawn before
I go to bed!).

I'll let her know you asked about her.
Maggie May

Update: November 12, 2010

Maggie May is such a sweet girl. She is definitely a big part
of our family. She loves to play with my grandchildren and she's becoming
acquainted with my newest granddaughter. Maggie loves to take walks and
sniffing is probably her greatest joy! I don't think she misses a blade of
grass! She loves to roll in the grass and we just let her flop around and
have a good time! We've had her since June 17, 2010 and she has become more
and more affectionate. We get kisses and she loves her belly rubbed! She
definitely loves her treats and everyone she meets loves her. We live in a
small town and everyone knows Maggie and greets her. She has become very
comfortable with her home and sleeps where she wants to. She is very gentle
and  smart; we couldn't imagine our lives without her. One of her most
favorite toys is a tennis ball, she loves to destroy them! We have a supply
and she usually goes through 3 a week.
Loxlee

Update: November 12, 2010

She has turned into a smart, feisty, loving little lady. She has gained
almost 1 pound and her hair is now soft, shiny and full. She is quite the
watch dog she is always ready to join our collie mix Misty to bark at any
noise or who knows what, if Misty barks Loxlee barks and is ready to back
her big sister up in protecting the house.*
*She did really well with her eye removal, never missed a beat, has a
wonderful appetite and loves her walks up and down the driveway.
Hope (formally Moon Pie)

Update: November 15, 2010

Hope has been with me for 9 months and she is doing great!  She lives with
3 cats and loves her trips to the woods on weekends.  She will be going to a
state hospital soon to meet with a classroom of troubled teens.   She loves
to ride in the car to new adventures and at night to play a game of tug of
war with her mom. I love bringing her out with her “I’m blind” banner as we
get stopped all the time by people marveling over how well she gets around.
No way you can tell she is blind!  Recently, I was walking her along a pond
and out of nowhere she ran into the water and started swimming toward the
ducks!  I held her leash while she swam in place.  I never knew she liked
water.  Since then, when I tell her to get the birdies..she starts running
down the street full throttle with mom in tow.  She keeps surprising me..
She is the best thing that ever happened to me and I thank God for her
every day.  Thank you Blind Dog Rescue for saving my girl…

Guapo (formally Janus)

Update: November 26, 2010

He is doing great in his new home.

Timbre

Update: November 29, 2010

This weekend was Timbre's first road trip to NY to meet our extended family.  Of course they all love him.  In the past few weeks Timbre has completely settled in.  He's the perfect addition to our family. He has shown a little bit of his mischievous side. We had one of those super nice canvas crates given to us. Timbre was in there for under an hour when he decided he wanted out! He must have scratched and scratched to rip the crate at the seam and escaped. He jumped on the kitchen table and tipped over the trash can and ate some bread and cheese.  He had a belly ache and threw up a little while later. Thankfully there wasn't anything in there that could cause any major damage and Timbre's fine now. Yesterday afternoon while we were unpacking from a shopping trip "Tim Tim", as Alex likes to call him, slipped out the front door and took a sprint across the street and 2 houses down.  I quickly lured him back with a treat and brought him back home to the back yard.  We're going to think about an electric fence for the front now. Other than that, Timbre has been wonderful and we love him SO much! We love taking him to the dog park and watching him play with all the others. Timbre is fearless and loves to run along the fence boardering the small and large dog areas and bark at the big dogs.  That was actually the FIRST time we heard Timbre bark!! Tim loves to chase and be chased in the yard.  He prefers that to fetch! At night he claims his spot right between Mom & Dad in bed.  He's a sweet, energetic, playful little boy and we wouldn't have him any other way. I really REALLY promise I'll send pictures soon.
Iris

Update: January 9, 2011

"Here are some pictures of Iris with her new brother (Osya the pug…aka Mr. O) and Chihuahua sister Kisa.   Kisa and Iris play for several hours each day and sleep in the same bed at night.  All 3 get along great spending lots of time snuggling on the couch and in front of our fireplace.
Thanks you for the holiday gift, she is the best present we have ever had.
"

Dulcinea

Update: January 11, 2011

Dulcinea wanted me to let you know how she's getting along, since you all played a part in  rescuing her.  She is house-broken, she does stairs like Rocky, and (as of 3 days ago) she sleeps through the night.  She's the best dog in a car we've ever had.  She loves food, snow, and just about everyone, human, canine or feline, that she has met.  And the vast majority love her back.  She hates the vacuum cleaner, the sound of shovel ling snow and going in her crate when we go out -- she does it, but she says no one can make her like it.  She's not very good on a leash yet, but she hasn't had much practice up here in the frozen north.  She likes hard rubber toys, the only ones she can have since she chews up and swallows the stuffed kind.  She is crazy about peanut butter.  Her favorite thing is her Kong with peanut butter inside.  She wants to thank you all for giving her a second chance at life, as do we.

Eileen and Dulcinea (she prefers Dulcinea to Dulcie)

Picture Update (below): February 23, 2011
Molly

Update: January 26, 2011

Molly is settling in well and doing fine with all the rest of the pack.  As she did there, she just walks around a lot and seems to pay little attention to the rest of them but is not frightened of them, either.  She is eating well -- still mostly chicken and rice with some dry dog food added.  I leave out a bit of small kibble dog food all the time for her and she has snacked on some of that during the day.  I have no problem getting the enalapril into her in her food (I just tuck it into a little piece of chicken) since she in on only one quarter of a pill every day.  The tramadol and the antibiotic are a totally different matter.  So far I have found nothing I can get her to take either of them in reliably.  I just picked up a prescription of the tramadol that the pharmacist mixed into a cream and put it in syringes and I will put 1 ml. on the inside of her ear flap twice a day.  That should work since she will let me rub her ears and it will make her a good bit more comfortable.  I'm going to dry a flavored liquid antibiotic starting tomorrow.  I may be wearing a lot of that!  She is more at ease in her surroundings and I think she feels at home already.

Dr. Laura thinks Molly is 13 or so years old.  She said her heart sounded good considering her age and background.  She did have some kidney infection -- hence the ill-fated antibiotic mentioned before.  She wants to recheck in two weeks at the end of the medicine and may want to do an ultrasound if there is still the trace of blood that showed up.  Even though Miss Molly wanted no part of the crate in the house, she let me put her in the one in the car with no problem, rode in it very peacefully, and was a very good girl at the vet's office.  She is a little love and I am so glad she is part of my pack.  I hope we have much good time together and promise to love her every day she lives and protect and care for her always.

Picture Update: February, 2011
Update: February 18, 2011

We have moved into a larger place, with a nice backyard, and Draven is loving it. He goes out and burrows in the snow. Then comes up for air and rolls, and rolls, and rolls. Since having his other eye removed, he has been noticeably happier and more alert. He still goes on his big walks, and runs when we hit the trail. Here are a few pics for you all to enjoy! Caroline has titled the second picture, "I don't have to have eyes to know you have treats."
