Level of blindness: Blind in right eye

Cause of eye issues: Eye injury that was never treated - he went blind from injury.

Health issues: Underweight, liver shunt, blind in one eye. Given Lactulose meds to help reduce body of ammonia levels. Also put on special liver food - Hill's L/D dry puppy food and Hills L/D canned puppy food.

Update 6/10/11: Live shunt surgery is on June 21.

Weight: 32lbs

Good with cats: unknown at the moment

Good with kids: Yes

Information:

Dewy is a sweet, friendly puppy who gets along with every person and dog he meets. He is blind in one eye, but that certainly does not slow him down! He does have a liver shunt. Hopefully we can have this operated on. We will know more after his surgeon visit. Right now, he's doing well on a special low protein diet. Please consider giving this special little guy a special forever home.

Dewy is a 4 month old Bernese Mountain Dog puppy who was born with an intrahepatic liver shunt. This is a blood vessel that carries blood around the liver rather than through it. The liver stores food for energy and filters out impurities. This shunt causes toxins to build up. He needs a coil implanted to block the shunt. This is a specialized surgery that will be done at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. It will cost $5,000. Without it, he will only live a couple years.
