This blind pit bull, we named Shoney, was brought into our ER, and the hospital manager offered to keep him... knowing he would have been euthanized at the shelter. Since I do rescue, thehospital managers and owner are looking to me to find a home for Shoney. I have posted Shoney on Petfinder, but I do not have experience adopting-out a blind dog, and I really need some help. ..which is why I am reaching out to all of you. If you know others who may be able to help me, please forward to them as well.
Shoney is probably about 6 years old. He's a pit bull/American bulldog mix. He is a total love!!! He is completely docile with all other dogs and loves every person he meets... tries to crawl in their laps to give hugs. Other than being blind and emaciated, Shoney appears to be healthy. He has an enormous appetite!!! He is heartworm positive, but he has had his first treatment and will have his 2nd in two weeks. Unfortunately, we have to wait to neuter him for 2-3 months after his hw treatment.

Bambi is fine with other non aggressive
small dogs but we prefer to have her placed in a home where she is either the
only child or maybe one other so that she will gets lots of attention. She
totters around finding her way following voices and scents but loves to be held
and cuddled. She came to us as one of 4 that had been very ill kept.
She has lost all of her teeth and her little tongue hangs out but she is just
the most loving little girl. We're not sure of her age but she is a
senior.

Meet Betty. You might find her appearance a bit startling at first. Yes, she is a one-eyed dog. And she's quite a large one-eyed dog at that. But she seems to find as much joy in the world through her single eye as any other dog gets through two eyes. Betty is a big fluffy love muffin with the personality of a gregarious and outgoing child. She's all bounce and fun, already best friends with her young and somewhat petite kennel mate, and she deserves a chance to be part of a family just as much as any other beautiful dog. Betty used to live out in the country, but she was tethered and confined to a small area where she received limited interaction. Now that she lives at HES, she seems to relish the attention she gets from staff and volunteers because of her very special look. But she really is ready to go home-she does miss the fresh country air, and would love a place to run. But please, don't take Betty home unless you truly plan to give her daily love and hugs, and room to romp without any tethers around her neck. If you can give her the home she's been waiting for, you are certain to be rewarded with years of love and laughter.

I
had originally planned to adopt Bobby when I agreed to take him from
the shelter. He is eight years old and has very
limited vision. He adapts very quickly and uses
his nose to make up for what he cannot see. But,
the problem with my adopting him is that he HATES and I do mean HATES
one of my other foster dogs, Maxamillion. He is
fine with my own two dogs, and my other two foster dogs.
In fact, he wrestles and plays with Maximus. But
he has hated Little Max from day one (which was Christmas Eve) and
still goes after him with a vengeance at any given opportunity. We are afraid that this might be a pattern with any
new male dog coming into our home situation and that would make life as a
foster home pretty miserable. Bobby is
affectionate, calm, loves to relax in his crate with the door open, a
very enthusiastic eater, rides well in the car and does well on a leash. He will destroy soft dog toys with great abandon. He loves to play with balls of any sort. Bobby had a very rough life - before he came to VGSR
he lived in crate on a porch, or was shut down in the basement when the
weather got too bad. He is one of those poor
souls whose life actually became BETTER after he went to the animal
shelter. Because of the way that he likes to
shred his toys, I am guessing that a home with a cat would not be a good
idea. Also, because of his limited vision, he
probably would do best in a home without very young children. But, Bob is a great guy that deserves a chance. For more information on Bob, please contact gsdhouse@comcast.net SLVA

Name: Molly (Special Needs) Adoption Fee: 50.00 Species: Dog Breed: Jack Russell Terrier (short coat) Sex: Female (spayed) General Potential Size: Small Current Age: 7 Years 1 Month (best estimate) Activity Level: Moderately Active Indoor or Outdoor: Indoor Only Good for Inexperienced Caregivers: Yes Good with Dogs: Yes Good with Kids: Yes Housetrained: Yes
Description: Molly is one very special little girl. We discovered that she has vision problems, since she has beginning cataracts in both her eyes. She loves her human person and at her foster home, she chose the whitest dog there to be her buddy, probably because she can more easily see a white dog. She can go upstairs easily, but tends to fall down when she reverses the direction. And, poor Molly does bump her head on things when she can't see them next to her. Molly is spayed, HW negative, and current with her rabies vaccine. She is perfectly housetrained, and she loves to sleep in bed with her humans all night long.
(Her family fell upon hard times and had to give up this precious little girl. We hate it when this happens to nice dogs and good families!) Please apply online to adopt.

SHADOW
Contact Information:
Beth Foster

|
"Shadow" is a sweet 6+ year old English Setter, rescued from an owner who refused to care for her anymore. She was most likely a well trained bird dog before she lost her sight. She is a beautiful example of the breed, bright white in color with a few orange spots. Shadow suffers from progressive retinal atrophy, a genetic disorder common in the breed. At present, she still has some vision when outdoors in bright light and can see fast movements. At night or indoors, she is nearly blind; the veterinarian expects that she will eventually lose all her sight. Shadow has been spayed, has all shots, is well housebroken, and is fine with other dogs. She is a dominant female, and likes to be top dog, but she is very submissive to humans and loves people. She is very affectionate, she loves to be brushed and petted and give kisses. She is crate trained. Shadow does very well in the house, where she tends to sleep and be very quiet. Outdoors, she is like any setter...she loves to run, play, and walk. She would be the PERFECT dog for a persons or families who likes taking walks or jogs. She also would be ideal for someone who likes an affectionate dog who is quiet in the house. Shadow cannot be trusted with small animals, cats, or poultry/parrots. She also is not good with very young children; she is not aggressive at all, but tends to be pushy and paw or "play grab" at them. Shadow is great with older kids. If you are interested in learning more about this wonderful dog, please contact her foster mom at smiles2mary@yahoo.com. You may also reach her at 540-290-7580.

LEO

Leo came to us through a shelter. He had been removed from his owner by animal control and needed help. You see, Leo is only ten months to a year old-- but he is almost totally (if not completely) blind. He needed someone who could help him to learn and be loved and we volunteered. His foster mom is GREAT! She has sent pictures and videos of this special little boy. Well, maybe he's not so little-- he's about 15-16 pounds, but is all puppy. Leo is quite an amazing dog. After he got the layout of his foster house down, he was able to get around with out much trouble at all. He knows where the food and water dishes are and he sniffs them out whenever he is thirsty or hungry. He can even go up stairs when he is done outside (with close and direct supervision of course!). Inside the house, all the stairs are blocked to prevent accidents. He uses his hearing and sense of smell to get around. When he is outside, he loves to follow the sound of his foster mom and dad's shoes in the grass and will follow them, around the yard. He is a super sweet dog and LOVES to cuddle and give kisses. There is a wonderful web site for owners of blind dogs: http://www.blinddogs.com/ There is information, and support from other owners of blind dogs. To see videos of Leo playing (some with his foster sister, Molly), look below: If you think you are the one who can give Leo the attention and love he deserves, please email us at potomacpekes@gmail.com.
We adopt in Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia, and some parts of NC. We require a home and vet check.
