I am writing from the Humane Society Silicon Valley in Milpitas, CA.  We have an 11 week old shepherd mix puppy that is vision impaired.  We have named her Sunshine, please see her photo attached.  Sunshine was originally a stray, we have no history.  She is spayed and we have had her examined by an opthamologist.  Structurally her eyes are intact, and we are doing focusing exercises with her, but it is not clear if her vision will ever improve.  She definitely sees some things and gets around reasonably well, but has a hard time with detail.  She is extremely sweet, but is still a puppy and can be mouthy in play.

Special Needs: deaf and partially sighted. Please read the Language of Love by Cyndi Cunico. I know you're there, but I cannot see you, I smell your presence and feel the vibrations of your footsteps, You call my name, but I cannot hear you, Although, I can feel your breath gently ruffle my fur, You wonder, "What in the world would I do with this dog?", I wonder, "How can I let you know I understand?", You decide to take a chance and give us a try, And I decide to do the same, You think I'll never figure out what you want, Because I can't see or hear you, But there's so much more to me than just sight or sound, I can always feel what's in your heart, When you are asleep and your eyes are closed, I lick your face, You know I am there because you can feel me, When you want my attention, you gently touch me, I react to your warm touch as quickly as though you called my name, I do understand because you are patient and caring, Yes, life will be different, You will forget and call my name, and I will not respond, Instead I will continue to do whatever it is I'm doing, But with the warmth of your touch, I will stop and wait for your next instruction, Language has a life of it's own, And does not always consist of words or signs, I will learn your language, If you are willing to learn mine, It's called the Language of Love...Please speak to me!

Herbie
Forever Home Pet Rescue
(818) 530-5305 for more information about this pet.

Herbie ia about 10 yrs old.

Herbie is a Terrie-poo/Lhasa mix.  He is black with white on his chest.

He is about 12 lbs.

Herbie was dumped at a high-kill shelter by his family as they could no longer keep him.  He has suffered terribly in his past as he cannot stand to be 'contained' in any way, i.e. a dog-crate.  He is blind from birth, and as such, is uncomfortable, at first, in an unknown space. If given the opportunity to roam about and become familiar with his surroundings, he will settle in.

Herbie loves to eat, play and explore.  He has a great appetite, will 'paw back at you' when you roll him on his back and give him tummy tickles and when he's had enough love, he gets right up and starts to wander about, gently nudging against barriers that he encounters.  He is very outgoing, in his own right, and fearless.  If you become his 'special person' he will even give you gentle kisses on your nose if you hold him close.

Herbie will cry to be let outdoors to do his business, however, if you do not respond within a reasonable amount of time, he will not wait for you to take your sweet time - Nature's calling!  He is currently using wee-wee pads when left alone indoors.

Herbie would do best in a home where he can be given a good deal of attention and love.  It seems he has led a somewhat loveless life, thus far.  He needs to become 'centered' in his forever home.  He needs a special person that he can bond to and trust so that he can become confident in unfamiliar places if his person is near.  He needs to be able to snuggle with someone at night, so that at least in this second chapter of his life, he will not be such a lost soul but a family member and part of the 'pack'.  He also needs a family that is highly responsible and attentive as he is blind and needs to be protected from inadvertently wandering out of the yard and/or into trouble.

Herbie is neutered, current on all vaccinations (including rabies) and is microchipped.
