Tuna has arrived! She is an 8 week old red Rottweiler puppy. She came to us from Ohio. She currently resides in a foster home in Michigan.
Red Rottweilers come from a recessive gene and can have eye and heart problems. We will be taking her to our vet ASAP for a checkup.
She can maybe see light, but nothing else. She certainly doesn't mind. A report form her foster home on her first night:
Curious, practically fearless, bullheaded...I just put her in the crate
with the blankie and stuffies in the bedroom after she's been charging
around the house getting swatted at by the cats and inspected by the
other dogs, and a couple of potty trips to the back yard. She screamed
like a banshee for about five minutes and now it's blessed silence.
Little Tuna
has crashed in the crate in the bedroom and we're about to go keep her
company...hopefully I'll get several hours of sleep. She is, of course,
freakin' adorable. The big dogs think she is really interesting and
want to play. And the cats are alternately horrified and
rolling their eyes. Ho hum, another dog.
And this morning's update:
She slept like
an angel all night in her crate, not a peep. Ignored her puppy chow (I
have a bag, so gave her a little) then nommed some tripe. Took her out
in the snowy back yard with me to potty, now she is in the office
figuring what she can chew and having puppy hiccups.
Now she is lying on my feet and chewing a rope toy. She's
being a little angel! Completely silent all night after the initial
protest. Sleeping on my feet right now. When she wakes up, it's back
outside for potty time, again. I swear she feels when something is close and swerves
before she bumps. She also has this funny habit of standing and
pointing her head straight up in the air above her head when she hears
something. And, she can play fetch. Well, chase. Throw something, she
moves towards the sound very accurately and pounces.
